What do you think the best way to fish with live worms is? Do you think it's as simple as "threading" a worm onto a hook and calling it good? I suppose for some anglers it does, but in my favorite movie, A River Runs Through It, the reverend McLain is quoted as saying, "Anyone who does not know how to catch a fish, should not be able to disgrace that fish by catching it." Although I am not a flea flicker, this quote rings true for all types of angling in my opinion. Especially live worm angling, and that goes for the way a live worm is rigged as well.
The best way to rig a live worm for fishing is a set of gang hooks. You've never heard of a set of gang hooks? A set of gang hooks is simply a pair of small hooks tied in tandem. With a little knot research you can tie them yourself, or you can purchase them pre-tied and ready to fish. The choice is yours, but the point is that gang hooks are the best live worm rig ever devised. You see, gang hooks enable the angler to present live worms in an outstretched and natural manner, rather than all "balled up". This results in more bites and subsequently more hook ups.
This is exactly how to set up the best live worm rig: Begin by taking the end of your line and attaching a small barrel swivel (size 10 or 12). Now attach one of your pre-tied set of gang hooks to the opposite end of the barrel swivel. The barrel prevents line twist and act as a stopper for your weights. My favorite way to fish this rig is in the moving water of rivers and streams, so I use split shot sinkers for weight. I add split shots above the barrel swivel to get my offering to the bottom. The goal is to bounce the offering off of the bottom as it flows naturally downstream. So I add and/or remove split shots depending on the current flow. Now add a live worm to the set of gang hooks. If night crawlers are being employed, simply pinch them in half (that's right with gang hooks you even get twice as much bait).
This is the basic live worm rig that works so well. As I said, I prefer to drift my offering through the current of a river or stream, but the same rig works under a bobber as well. If your kids like catching pan fish, you need top use gang hooks. You won't have to bait their hooks nearly as much, and as anyone with kids knows, baiting their hook every two minutes is a pain in the butt! By using gang hooks you double the amount of worms you have (in the case of night crawlers) and hook many more fish. Give them a shot and you'll learn for yourself that the best live worm rig ever created is a set of size 6, 8, or 10 gang hooks.
